Creamy Mashed Potatoes with Butter and Cream Cheese
Rich, Smooth Mash Adjusted to Your Taste
🍽️ 6 servings Prep 10 min. Cook 30 min. Total 40 min. ⭐ Easy

Well-cooked potatoes, butter and cream cheese make my favorite mashed potatoes. Add the rich ingredients gradually and taste as you go.

The Story Behind the Recipe

Mashed potatoes never particularly excited me. I would eat them, but I did not consider them an especially memorable side dish. That changed when I tasted a version that made me wonder what could make a simple mash so delicious.

Through experimenting at home, I discovered the combination I enjoy: generous butter and cream cheese, added gradually until the flavor and texture feel right.

That is why I do not give strict quantities for these two ingredients. Whatever amount of potatoes you cook, the approach stays the same: mash, add a little, mix and taste.

Serve it alongside my Pork with Prunes and Red Wine.

The Technique

  • Cook the potatoes until completely tender.
  • Drain thoroughly.
  • Add butter, cream cheese and any milk gradually.
Ingredients
  • Large potatoes: approximately 4-5

  • Butter: to taste

  • Cream cheese: to taste

  • Milk: a little, only if needed

  • Garlic powder: to taste

  • Salt

  • Black pepper

Steps

Boiling

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut into similar-sized pieces.

  2. Place in cold salted water and bring to a boil.

  3. Cook until completely tender, approximately 20-30 minutes after boiling begins, depending on size.

  4. Drain well and return to the pot.

Mashing and Seasoning

  1. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher.

  2. Gradually add butter and a little milk only if needed.

  3. Add garlic powder, pepper and cream cheese. Mix until creamy.

  4. Taste and adjust the butter, cream cheese and salt.

  5. Serve warm.

Tips and Secrets

  1. The potato quantity is only a guide. Scale the recipe freely.

  2. You may not need any milk.

  3. Use a potato masher rather than a blender to keep the texture pleasant.
